1. Purpose

This policy outlines expectations for all Rescue & Resuscitation (R&R) competitors, parents, and coaches regarding team formation, training commitment, carnival attendance, and fundraising responsibilities. It ensures fairness, consistency, and a strong team culture across all age groups. It should be read in conjunction with the Carnival Team Selection Policy.

2. Participation Expectations

  • R&R is a team discipline, and every competitor must demonstrate reliability, respect, and commitment to their teammates.
  • Competitors are expected to attend training consistently, communicate absences early, and uphold the standards of the event.
  • Parents play an active role in supporting their child’s commitment and ensuring availability for carnivals and team requirements.

3. Team Formation & Selection

  • Teams are formed based on:
  • Consistent attendance
  • Demonstrated understanding of the drill
  • Ability to work cohesively within the team
  • Readiness to compete at Branch
  • Competitors are encouraged to form teams with friends and training partners where possible.
  • Competitors and parents may propose team combinations to coaches for consideration.
  • Coaches will consider team preferences where practical, however final team selection and composition remains the responsibility of the coaching team.
  • Coaches will guide team formation up to Branch Championships.
  • Once teams are set for Branch, all members must agree to continue together if progressing to State.
Reserve Competitors
  • Where a team includes a reserve competitor, all members are expected to train and prepare as part of the team.
  • The decision regarding which competitors will compete in the Championship team and which competitor will act as reserve for Branch, State, Australian Titles, or other major events will be made by the team’s coach in consultation with at least one other R&R coach.
  • Selection decisions will be based on the best interests of the team and may take into account attendance, commitment, performance, reliability, team cohesion, and competition readiness.
  • Coach selection decisions are final and are expected to be respected by competitors and parents aligning with expectations defined under Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s Code of Conduct.

4. Branch Carnival – Mandatory for All Teams

  • Combined Branch Championships are compulsory for every R&R team.
  • All teams formed during the season are expected to compete at Branch unless exceptional circumstances arise.
  • Branch performance, commitment, and team cohesion determine whether a team is eligible to continue to State.

5. Progression to State Championships

Progression beyond Branch is earned through commitment and readiness.

To continue training and compete at State, teams must:

  • Have shown consistent commitment throughout the season
  • Demonstrate they know the drill to a State‑ready standard
  • Have competed at Branch
  • Have all team members fully committed to continuing together.

Important:

  • Coaches will not negotiate or reorganise teams after Branch.
  • Any issues regarding commitment, availability, or continuation must be resolved between competitors and parents, not coaches.

6. Training After Branch

  • Post‑Branch training is reserved only for teams progressing to State.
  • Teams not continuing to State conclude their R&R season at Branch.
  • Training schedules for State teams will be set by coaches and must be adhered to.

7. Progression to Australian Titles

Teams do not need to qualify to attend the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. However, coach support for attending Aussies is not automatic. Coaches will support teams progressing to Aussies when they have demonstrated:

  • Consistent commitment throughout the season
  • Strong attendance and effort in the lead‑up to State
  • A solid understanding of the drill and ability to perform under pressure
  • Team cohesion, reliability, and a positive attitude
  • A performance level appropriate for national competition.

If a team has not shown the required commitment or readiness, coaches may decide not to support progression to Aussies.

8. Parent & Competitor Responsibility

Parents and competitors must:

  • Communicate clearly within their team
  • Confirm availability for State and Aussies early
  • Resolve team‑based issues directly with each other
  • Support the expectations and standards set by the R&R program Coaches are not responsible for mediating disagreements or reorganising teams after Branch.

9. Culture & Conduct

All participants must uphold the values of Redcliffe Peninsula SLSC:

  • Teamwork
  • Respect
  • Reliability
  • Sportsmanship

Behaviour that undermines team cohesion may affect eligibility to compete.

10. Fundraising & Parent Support

Requirements The R&R program relies on fundraising and volunteer support to provide equipment, uniforms, training resources, and a sustainable program for all competitors.

General R&R Fundraising

General R&R fundraising supports the broader R&R program and may be used for:

  1. Team uniforms
  2. Equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement
  3. Purchase of new equipment and training resources
  4. General program expenses and development
  5. Support for Branch, State, and Australian Titles participation

Funds raised through general R&R fundraising remain within the wider R&R program and are not allocated to the bi-annual R&R trip.

Bi-Annual R&R Trip

The bi-annual R&R trip is funded separately from general R&R fundraising.

  1. Parents and guardians of competitors attending the bi-annual R&R trip are expected to actively participate in trip-specific fundraising activities.
  2. Families attending the trip may be required to assist with fundraising events, volunteer activities, or other approved initiatives organised for the trip.
  3. Funds raised through trip-specific fundraising will be used to support costs associated with the bi-annual R&R trip, including travel, accommodation, and team activities.
Why This Matters
  1. R&R is a team-based discipline requiring specialised equipment, dedicated coaching, and ongoing investment.
  2. Fundraising helps keep the program affordable, accessible, and well-resourced.
  3. Parent and competitor involvement strengthens the R&R community and supports the long-term success of the program.
