General course information

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia. 

The course is recommended for SLS members who wish to:

  • perform in the role of a qualified lifesaver after the age of 15 years
  • participate in SLS surf sports competitions which require them to be proficient in the Bronze Medallion as a prerequisite condition
  • progress through the SLS Aquatic Rescue or Powercraft award pathway

Specific entry requirements

Candidates must meet all of the following conditions:

  • a financial member of Redcliffe Peninsula SLSC
  • candidates must be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • prior to starting the course, must have the ability to swim 400 metres in nine (9) minutes or less, unaided (goggles/masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres. This will be observed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities.

How you will learn

The Bronze Medallion is designed to be delivered using a blended learning approach. This means that you will learn using a variety of methods including face-to-face learning (in the classroom, on the beach and in the water) and self-paced learning (online or paper-based and completed in your own time).

The SLSA Bronze Medallion provides participants with skills and knowledge related to:

  • teamwork 
  • surf life saving patrol operations

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded with the SLSA Bronze Medallion. You will also receive the following nationally recognised qualification and units of competency issued through Surf Life Saving Queensland (RTO 2804):

  • PUA20119 – Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
  • PUACOM001 Communicate in the workplace
  • PUASAR012 Apply surf awareness and self-rescue skills
  • PUASAR013 Participate in an aquatic rescue operation
  • PUATEA001 Work in a team
  • PUATEA004 Work effectively in a public safety organisation
  • PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment
  • PUAWHS001 Follow defined work health and safety policies and procedures

Assessment

  • Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace.
  • Assessments must be completed in a similar environment to where patrol activities will be undertaken. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
  • Also includes learning theory and assessment theory questions (these can be completed online (preferred) or via hard copy).

Annual skills maintenance/proficiency requirements

For your Bronze Medallion award to remain current, members must perform an annual skills maintenance activity each year. This involves both theory and practical sessions. Please note that if you gain your award after 1st July then you are not required to attend skills maintenance until the following year.
